The Nglnd Xpx collection mixes sci-fi with humour, mixes serious questions with comedy and rather mercilessly puts the caricatured English gentleman through the mill, hitting him with more Hollywood cinematic clichés than is probably fair. The ten stories will start you off in sober mood among androids and dogs and grumpy human migration but, by the time you’ve read the last story, you will know how first contact with alien species should really be done. Aside from the very occasional outburst of mild slang such as might be uttered by an English Indian-Army Colonel in front of the lady memsahib and polite society, there is nothing here to frighten the horses or to stop the hens from laying. The collection should most certainly be read with tongue firmly in cheek and with a cliché-swat close to hand. If possible, for best effect please switch the little voice of the narrator in your head to mimic either the very best or the very worst old-fashioned BBC radio announcer English accent.
